In particular, alto Melanie Malinka and soprano Maria Alu sang their solos with lyrical grace.
Soprano Maria Alu (Eurydice), making her WBO debut, proved lovely in voice and appearance. That she could move gracefully in ballet slippers and interact with KUNST-STOFF's dancers made her ideal for a production in which the line between singer and dancer was intentionally blurred.
The performers, sopranos Maria Alu and Yeonjune Suh; tenors Colin D. Eaton II and Nathan Carlisle; and baritone Daniel Collins proved themselves to be adept practitioners of the bel canto style...Her (Maria Alu) performance of the aria "Oh! quante volte" from Bellini's "I Capuleti ed i Montecchi" ("The Capulets and the Montagues") demonstrated an exceptional ability to spin out a delicate vocal line with gorgeous soft notes. And what notes! They were cleanly delivered, beautifully sustained and with impressive breath control.
"Alu's soprano voice was remarkably free, its effortless quality brightening every scene she was in, and her acting natural. Euridice's desperation when her husband will not meet her eyes must be believable or the scene can fall into melodrama, and Alu achieved just the right balance."
